Sunburn Balm

j0440405 Late spring is a bad time of year for getting sun burns.  People are spending more time outside, but haven’t yet gotten into the summertime routine of applying sunscreen every day.  Really, you should be applying it rear-round, not just in summer!

This is a little something I whipped up last year as a foot rub.  The menthol content of the Peppermint creates a  cooling, tingling effect on the skin.

Last summer while on vacation, I got a bad sunburn on the entire right side of my face from riding with the window open during a long car ride. Since my foot rub had such soothing properties, I decided to give it a try on my face.

By the next morning, all the redness was gone!  My sunburn never progressed to the yucky, peeling skin stage.

Of course, I can’t guarantee that everyone will have those results, but at least this balm will provide a bit of pain relief.

What you need:

j0440540100 mLs of aloe vera gel – You can find this at most drugstores

25 drops Peppermint EO

20 drops Lavender EO

5 drops Ylang Ylang EO (optional)

A clean, empty jar

What you do:

1.  Place your aloe gel in a clean container.

2.  Add the essential oils, mixing carefully after each one.

3.  Apply to sunburned skin BEFORE it starts to peel. Once the skin begins peeling, the Peppermint oil may be too irritating, but you’ll have to do a test patch to judge for yourself, as well all have different skin sensitivity levels.

This balm is also nice to cool down the skin even when you don’t have a sunburn.  Aloe sometimes leaves a sticky film behind, so I often follow up with some cocoa butter.

Signs of Spring!

004

Okay, this one might be a bit late since we’re getting closer to signs of summer now (like frizzy hair).

There is a pond on the property of where I work (my day job, as I like to call it), and we have 2 or 3 nesting Canadian geese couples that come back every year.  This was my first glimpse of the year at the babies. This picture was taken a few weeks ago – the goslings are now losing their cute yellow baby down and getting that awkward, brownish feathered,  adolescent look.

In a few more weeks, they will being getting their Canadian Geese colours, and they will be physically indistinguishable from their parents.  You can still tell who the yearlings are, though.  They are the ones that come back to the pond once a week for a home cooked meal and to drop off a bag of their dirty laundry.

Using Excel to Keep Track of & Sort Your Essential Oil Inventory

As my education and experience grows, so does my collection of essential oils. I developed a simple spreadsheet to help me keep track of my EO inventory.  What I love about the spreadsheet format is that I can sort the collection by different criteria.   Most of the time, I keep them sorted alphabetically by common name.

EOs_common_name

If I’m looking to treat a specific ailment, I may want to chose an oil from a particular botanical family.  Each botanical family has common properties – for example, the citrus family (Rutaceae) all tend to be refreshing and cooling.   The Myrtaceae family (think Tea Tree) is excellent for congestion or infections.

EOs_family

What if I’m creating a perfume, or a room spray, and I’m not really thinking about therapeutic properties – I just want to create something that smells lovely?  Then I need to make sure my blend is balanced by including top, middle and base notes.

EOs_note

I also use this spreadsheet to track the size of the bottle and the date purchased.  Let’s say I go to use my Lime and it’s a little bit “off”, or dull.  I just take a look at the spreadsheet and can see at a glance, “Yup, that oil is over a year old and citruses normally don’t last much longer than that.”

Sorting Data in Excel 2007

1. Create your spreadsheet.  You don’t need any sort of expertise – I haven’t used any macros or formulas.  Just write your categories into the first row (I made the text bold so they would stand out), and fill in each column with your data.

2. Click the “Data” menu tab.

3. Click on the “Sort” icon; It has the letters A Z on it – be sure you click the biggest icon as you want to open the Sort dialog box.

sort_data

4.  In the “Sort” dialog box, be sure that “My data has headers” box is checked.

5. In the first drop-down menu, select which criteria you would like to sort your data.

6. If you would like the data to sort by a second criteria (i.e., first group alphabetically by botanical family, and then alphabetically by common name), click on “Add another level”.

sort_dialog

7.  Click “okay”, and your data will automatically sort!

Scheduling My Blogs

Since all my time no longer needs to be devoted to studying, I plan to work on making my blog more informative and interactive.  Window’s Live Writer allows me to work offline, write my blog posts in advance and set them to publish at a later date.  I’ll take advantage of this feature by writing a week’s worth of blogs on my days off (Mondays & Tuesdays) and then scheduling them to publish over the week.

Here is my tentative schedule:

MondaysEssential Oil Spotlight Series.  If you have an oil you want to know more about, just e-mail me or leave a comment here and I’ll feature it one week.

TuesdaysArticles about running or promoting a business and organizing your business/craft.

Wednesday My Etsy favourites – stuff I’ve bought and stuff I want to buy.

Thursday – A tutorial.  These won’t always be aromatherapy related.  I’m crafty in many ways, you know!  Sometimes I may just get lazy and link to someone else’s really cool tutorial!

Friday – Fun Photos or other random things.

Saturday – Aromatherapy Tips or Essential Oil Recipes.

Sunday – Open.  I may use this day to feature other aromatherapists, complementary health practitioners, and bath and body shop owners.

Now that I’ve published this, I know you all will hold me to it! :)

Certification Exams – Results!

IMG_4598_1Passed!

Passed!

Passed!

Once I send in my case studies (I need 9 more, so let’s hear some volunteers!), I will be a Certified Aromatherapist, educated by the Joyessence School of Aromatherapy.  Joy Watson is a fantastic teacher, by the way.  She has so much experience and is very patient and personable.  She offers a correspondence course in Aromatherapy (learning all about essential oils, plus human anatomy, physiology and pathology), and a 5-day, in-person course on aroma-massage bodywork.

Next up?

Taking the CFA exam, which will give me the federally recognized title of Certified Aromatherapy Health Professional (CAHP).

Thanks to everyone for your support :)

Aromafest 2009

I arrived at the conference bright & early and then promptly realized I’d forgotten to bring any cash or my chequebook.  Well, let’s pray that a few of the vendors will take credit cards!  I used my last bit of cash (a two-dollar coin) to purchase a ticket for the 50/50 draw.  That turned out to be a very wise investment! (There will be a separate blog about that because it is quite an interesting story).

Yeah!  A few vendors did take credit cards.  I did my initial shopping damage at this table, run by Heidi Light from The Arrhianna Centre in Uniondale, Ontario.   Those luscious looking soap chunks in the centre are Chocolate Mint and Orange Patchouli.  I’m the proud new owner of both!    I also purchased a set of Chakra stones, which I’ve been looking for everywhere!

IMG_4846

The first order of business was the AGM of the CFA.  This was my first time attending and I found it very interesting and informative.  There are A LOT of very skilled and knowledgeable practitioners working in this field and I look forward to getting to know them better and learning from their experiences.

The most important thing I learned at the meeting? That I cannot use the terms “massage” and “therapy” in any context together in my promotional materials. This would include the phrase “aromatherapy massage”.  That phrase (among others) is owned by the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario.  From now on, I’ll be sure to refer to what I do as aroma-massage or simply aromatherapy treatments.

IMG_4841 (Random picture of a tapestry hanging on the church wall.  I just loved the multi-cultural aspect)

Monika Meulman of The Healing Muse, presented her current findings from a study she is conducting regarding the use of essential oils with children who have Autism.  (In the second part of the study – which she is currently conducting – she’ll be using the oils with children who have other disabilities).  Her insights are quite thought provoking.  I won’t go into too much detail here, but she has given me permission to share her notes, so I plan to scan them and provide a link or e-mail them to anyone who is interested.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm…..lunch.  And look at the little fella (or gal) who joined us.  Guess someone left the front door of the church open!  Moments after having my sandwich pilfered by this sweet Jack Russel, I saw a young boy walk by the window, clutching a leash and looking very concerned! Have no fear --  Boy & Dog were reunited.

IMG_4848 IMG_4844

After lunch, Danielle Sade of Healing Fragrances provided an extremely informative and educational workshop about blending essential oils according to Einstein’s Theory of Relativity.   Her approach is very scientific – we look a the chemical compositions of each oil, and choose them based on how each chemical affects the autonomic nervous system.   Danielle really knows her essential oils; I’d love to take her advanced essential oils course in the future.  If you live in the Toronto area and are considered studying aromatherapy, please consider her school.

It was a great day for everyone and I am really looking forward to attending again next year.  This time as a professional member!

Oh no she didn’t!

First, it was the plain ole’ bar of soap -- if you can call the wonderful aroma of Dulce de Leche ‘plain’.

Then, the Cream Fraiche Sugar Scrub.  My favourite scent combined with my favourite B&B product – sugar scrubs.  Yay!

Next we had a body spray.  I’m not usually a perfume kind of gal, but I sure don’t mind smelling like dessert all day.

I thought we had reached the peak of perfection with the Crema body butter – the scent layering was complete!

Then I get home from my little weekend away to find we now have Dulce de Leche – the lip butter!! Yummy, yummy, yummy!  Thank-you, Lisa!!! (aka Savor)

I ordered two and will sit patiently by the mailbox until they arrive.  And yes, they are BOTH for me!!

My First Giveaway!

My preliminary certification exams are finally over and I can take a moment to relax!  At least until it’s time to take my final exam with the CFA.  For now,  I would like to concentrate on bringing more business to my Etsy shop,  so I’m trying out the infamous blog giveaway marketing tactic.  I will be giving away a 3-pack of my Aromatherapy Essential Oil Nasal Inhalers – you get to choose the scents!  This item sells for $16 US in my shop. Just a quickie…

I’ve been taking the occasional “short” break from studying to peruse Etsy, Facebook and keep up with my favourite blogs.  I stumbled across a photo tour of the most beautiful place in the world while using the Networked Blogs application in Facebook.  Um, wow.  This is basically my dream studio.  Please have a look for yourself!  My only wish is that I was not located on the other side of the continent (plus in a different country) from her!

See you in a few weeks!

I must take a short break from blogging while I focus on studying for my final aromatherapy exams.  There are three exams in total – Materia Medica; Anatomy & Physiology, plus the hand-on practical for massage/bodywork.

Aromafest 2009 will be taking place the same weekend that I’ll be in Guelph, Ontario to write my exams.  I’m very excited that I get to take part this year and I’m especially looking forward to the talk about The Effect of Essential Oils on Autistic Behaviour.   Of course, seeing all the vendors will be a treat as well, since I am a self-confessed “supply whore”.  I’ll be sure to leave the credit cards at home!

AGM

If by chance there are some aromatherapists out there who also plan on attending Aromafest, please contact me so we can meet up!  Also, if you desire accommodations in the beautiful city of Guelph, my favourite place is the London House Bed & Breakfast.  The house is gorgeous and the hosts are just wonderful people.  When I visited Guelph for a week in 2008, I stayed in the English Maid’s room on the 3rd floor.  I essentially had the entire 3rd floor to myself for the whole week (there were two other guests on two separate nights, but they arrived late and left early the next morning).  It was like having my own apartment.    Just look at that adorable kitchen!  Plus there was an awesome healthy-foods grocery store just a 10 minute walk away.  Throw in the fact that someone else was making my bed and cleaning the bathroom --  I almost didn’t want to leave!

Send me all your positive thoughts for next weekend, I’d really appreciate it!

Windows Live Writer – Best Kept Secret in the Blogging World?

IMG_0894 If you are a user of blogger.com, then you are familiar with the bare-bones post editor.  Let’s be frank, here:  it sucks.  The text window is super small, so you can’t get an accurate picture of what your post will really look like on the screen.  The “add image” tool seems to have a mind of its own – at least with me, anyway.  Every single picture I added automatically went to the top of the post.  Then I would have to drag & drop it to its desired location, or cut & paste the HTML.  (Note – throughout this post you will see a few of the many different options Writer gives you for posting pictures). Blogger also does not give you the option to schedule future publish dates for your blog entries.   You could save a post as a draft but then you would have to log back in to publish the post manually.  I tend to get into blogging moods where I will churn out 5 or 6 posts in one night.  But I don’t want to publish them all on the same day.

I first heard about Windows Live Writer on The Blog Doctor.  Having already given up on the sucky on-line editor, I’d been using Microsoft Word (Office 2007) to create my posts.  Word made it easier to add hyperlinks, format text and control the placement of photos, but when it came time to publish the post, I still had to upload the photos separately and then go back and make sure all the links were working. Also, any cool effects I added to the photos (like frames) didn’t upload with the pictures.  Now, I’m sure there was a way to fix it if I really wanted to work at it,  but it’s just an example of how Word wasn’t very user-friendly for blog publishing.  I like things to just work automatically!  And with Word, there was still the problem of not being able to schedule automatic future publishing.

add your own alt text with ease

The Blog Doctor’s post encouraged me to give Live Writer a try, and I was immediately hooked.

You will need a Windows Live ID in order to use Writer.  If you use Messenger, you already have this.  If not, it’s easy to sign up.   When it comes time to publish your post, Writer will automatically upload your photos to your Picasa album and link them to the post.  Don’t have a Picasa album?  I didn’t think I did either, but if you blog with Blogger, you already have a Google account, and by extension you have Picasa as well.

IMG_1013 There are many options for cool photo effects -- drop shadows, rounded corners and  Polaroid paper are just a few.  You can even add your own watermark (as above).

If you use Live Albums, there are even more choices. Look at the way cool options for displaying your albums when you blog with Windows Live.  You can even create the album directly from the your post in Writer,  like I did with the following pictures:

And last, but definitely not least, my favourite feature:  the ability to schedule when you want your posts to publish, right down to the minute.  This is perfect for people like me who have only one free day a week to dedicate to blogging.  I can write 5 or 6 posts in one day and schedule them to publish one at a time over the following week.  That’s also a great way to keep your blog up to date if you are going on vacation and don’t want to be chained to your computer for a week.   Writer also makes it easy to past-date a blog entry, which is my “secret” to creating the “About”, “Links” and “Products” pages that my header navigation bar links to.

Okay, now we have this awesome program for blogging and just about everyone with internet access is blogging these days, so why does is seem that hardly anyone knows about Live Writer?  Whenever I tell someone, they are so grateful and wonder how they got along without it.  I mean, it’s Microsoft, they are pretty good at the viral marketing.  I’m surprised Writer doesn’t already come pre-installed on most computers.

There are way more features than what I’ve mentioned here (imbedding tables and maps), so why not try it out for yourself?  Let me know what you think!

Bath Powder

Who doesn’t love to soak in a hot bath at the end of a stressful day?  Maximize the benefits of your unwinding time by adding a custom-scented bath powder to your tub. To create your own custom bath powder, you will need:IMG_3380_5

Ingredients

2 cups Epsom salts

2 cups sea salt (any kind)

1 cup baking soda

1/2 cup powdered milk (optional)

1/2 cup oatmeal flakes (optional)

Blend of essential oils (see below for some suggestions) – You’ll need about 30-50 drops total.  Use more EOs if you plan to add extra powder such as milk and oatmeal to the mix.

Equipment

Coffee grinder or spice mill, preferably one dedicated to making bath powders

Large bowl

Wooden spoon

Decorative jar or container (must be air-tight)

Blending Instructions

1. Following the directions for your coffee grinder/spice mill, grind up the salts (about 1/2 cup at a time) until you have a fine powder.  Transfer the powder to the large bowl as you go.   If you are planning to include oatmeal, grind that in the mill as well.

Why do I grind my salts first?  To avoid sitting on a clump of salt rocks once you are in the tub!  You may skip this step if you purchase fine sea salts, as Epsom salts are normally already quite small and will dissolve readily in the tub.

2. Add your essential oils to the salt mixture, about 10 drops at a time, stirring thoroughly each time.

3. Once the essential oils are blended in, you may add the baking powder, plus any other powders you wish to include (oatmeal or milk).  Stir well.

4.  Transfer to air-tight containers.  Product may form clumps – this is normal.  Do not allow water to get into the jar.

IMG_3444_31

To Use:

Add about 3/4 of a cup to a full bath and stir well.  Soak and enjoy!

Essential Oil Synergy Options

Do not limit yourself to my suggestions!  If you already have a particular oil or a blend that you like, go ahead and use that one.  The most effective synergy is one that you love!

Relaxing – Lavender, Clary Sage & Marjoram. Avoid this blend if you are pregnant.  Please note that Clary Sage can exaggerate the effects of alcohol – this could be a could thing or a bad thing, depending on how relaxed you want to be. wink, wink.

Muscle Aches – Eucalyptus, Rosemary & Black Pepper.  Rosemary should be avoided in pregnancy and by people with seizure disorders.  Use Lavender instead.

Cold & Flu – Niaouli, Peppermint & Basil

Pregnancy – Grapefruit & Lavender

Children (relaxation) – Mandarin (Tangerine) & Lavender

Spotlight On: Clary Sage

Botanical Name: Salvia sclarea

Part of plant used: flowering tops

Method of extraction: Steam distillation

This is an oil that I didn’t really get into using until recently.  Now I am hooked and use it quite a bit.  The scent is herby, as one would expect, but do not confuse it with common Sage, Salvia officinalis,  which is the kind that is probably growing in your garden right now. The two oils have completely different chemical make-ups.

Containing mainly esters and alcohols, Clary Sage is an extremely relaxing oil, even inducing euphoria in some.  This oil should be avoided in situations when concentration is required.  You do not want to diffuse Clary Sage in the car on a long trip! It acts as a sedative and can have a hypotensive effect (reduces blood pressure).  When using this oil, one should avoid alcohol consumption, as Clary Sage can exaggerate its effects.  In England it is sometimes used as a substitute for hops in beer making.  And I thought Canadian beer was strong!

A synergy of Clary Sage, Marjoram and Lavender is my standard go-to relaxation blend. This is what I will use on a client who is new to aromatherapy, or really has no health complaints and is just looking for something to help them relax and unwind.

Salvia_sclarea3

Besides relieving stress and nervousness, Clary Sage is an excellent uterine tonic.  It is a hormone balancer and can help with cramping, lower back pain and menstrual flow regulation. Please note that it should be avoided during pregnancy because it is considered an emmenagogue (induces uterine bleeding).  However, some aromatherapists may use a blend containing Clary Sage to massage a woman who has already begun her labour, as it can help the uterus contract, thus causing labour to progress faster.

The seeds from the Clary Sage plant were once used to combat eye infections and other ocular conditions – this is where the name Clary Sage, or  “clear mind(eye)” is derived from.

Happy Mother’s Day

IMG_4826

My step-son made this beautiful card for me, and my boys treated me to pancakes with strawberries & whipped cream (real whipped cream – DH actually whipped the cream with a stick blender), then we spent the morning at the park.  Now everyone is napping or playing quietly and I’m off to go buy myself my Mother’s Day gift – Lego Star Wars, The Complete Saga for Nintendo DS.  Yeah, I’m a cool mom!

Later this afternoon I’m having one of my mom friends in for a massage treatment, which is a treat for both of us.

Happy Mother’s Day to all women – whether you have the title “mom” or not, we all contribute to raising children in this world.

New Career Path?

Boy I am getting good with this HTML stuff!  Or maybe I am just good at Googling things and following tutorials.  At any rate, I figured out how to add an image as the background for my blog!  I think I’m ready to become a web page designer now! (As if).

Here is a super easy tutorial.  I won’t repeat everything here because not only would that be plagiarism, but it would be a big waste of typing.

I made my image just by creating a new file in Photoshop (2000 px wide x 1500 px high).  Then all I did was fill it with a standard background, and created an adjustment layer to lighten the colours up.  Here is a thumbnail of my  background image:

 background-thumb

Then I just followed the instructions for inserting a fixed background image that does not repeat.  I also centered it by using the “top center” command.  If someone with a screen resolution of greater than 2000 pixels wide visits my blog, then they will see some white bars on either side.  Keep in mind, though, that I use a stretch template so my blog fills the width of the screen.  With a fixed-width template, you will have even greater control over the background photo.

UPDATE -- I've since updated my background (as I'm sure you can see!), but that just goes to show you how easy this tutorial makes it!  I found my current background (swirls repeating) at www.RepeatXY.com

It’s HTML! And I helped!

{That’s a little take on an old Shake-n-Bake commercial, for those of you who aren’t old enough to remember and/or didn’t get my attempt at humour.}

Spring cleaning isn’t just for offices! I spent the better part of the evening tweaking my blog.  Here are some of the changes I made, and how you can do it too!

More Widget Room

As my blog grows, I found that I was running out of room for all of my widgets! Sure, I could just run them all down the ride-hand column, or even stack a few on the bottom of the page, but who wants to scroll down that far?  Let’s face it, if it’s not immediately visible on the screen, it ain’t getting clicked!  So I decided that adding a 3rd column to my template was the way to go.

There are two ways of doing this:

1. Install a 3-column template.  The best and (easiest) option if you do not have a blog yet (or you just started), you are best to start from scratch with a 3-column template.  Don’t be limited by my links – just plug “3 column blog templates” into Google and there are hundreds of choices out there.

2. Tweak your current template. If you already have an established blog and don’t want to lose all your widgets (or go through the hassle of copying & saving all the HTML and later pasting it into your new template), you can use one of these tutorials to edit your current template’s HTML.

Since I love the Minima Stretch, I used a tutorial specific to that template.  The main difference (as far as I can tell) is that when using a stretch template, the widths are described in terms of percentages, rather than pixels.

WARNING:  Please, please, please do not be a silly pants – BACK UP your current template before you start messing around with the HTML.  I’m not kidding.  It takes 2 seconds and can save you many headaches.

One hiccup I had that you might run into:  After editing the HTML, when I previewed the blog it looked as if I had simply added another column to the right-side.  There was the main column of blog posts on the far left, then about 200px of blank space, and then the current contents of my left column.   If you just go to your “Edit Layout” page, you will see that you do, indeed, have one widget column on each side of the blog post column.  Once you start moving your elements/widgets around, the columns will shift into the correct order.

Grab my Button!

Create your own Button box with the help of this tutorial.  I simply used one of my current avatar images and modified the text in Photoshop.  What are you waiting for?  Grab my button!

hsablogbutton

<a href="http://www.heatherscent.com"><img src="http://ca.geocities.com/heather.scent/images/hsablogbutton.jpg"/> </a>

I’ll Send An SOS to the World…

This one I am especially proud of – my new e-mail button.  I originally grabbed an “E-Mail Me!” gadget from Cathe Holden’s Just Something I Made blog.  {BTW, if you have any crafty bones in your body, you need to check out her blog.}   Her gadgets are lovely, but I wanted something more personal.  I used a photograph from one of my old Etsy listings (Message In A Bottle) and then simply added text using Photoshop.   You will need to upload your image to a webhost (just like you did for the blog button).

Then add a new HTML gadget to your blog and paste in the following code.  The parts in red you will need to customize for your blog.

<center><a href="mailto:YOUR_EMAIL@YOURDOMAIN.COM"><img src="http://URL of your image.jpg"/></a></center>

I like to center everything.  If you want it aligned to the left, just delete the <center> at the beginning and the </center> at the end.  (Be careful not to delete anything else!)

No more crazy Fan page URLs!

There is a neat application on Facebook that lets you create a badge for your Facebook Fanpage or group.  It will generate the HTML for you, so all you have to do is copy and paste into a new HTML gadget.  The only glitch I’ve noticed so far is that the image will not automatically update when you update your Profile image on your Fanpage.  You can always generate new HTML and update the Blogger gadget manually.

Spring Cleaning

I recently blogged about my home office, including some of my tips and tricks for staying organized.  Every so often, though, I need a change.  Since replacing all my furniture is too costly (not to mention environmentally irresponsible – why get rid of perfectly good furniture just because I have design ADD?) and repainting is too time consuming, I satisfy my cravings by re-arranging and re-organizing.

These first two shots are of the bookshelves you see when coming up the stairs.  I haven’t moved the placement of these guys (they need to stay where they are as they act as a dividing wall), but I did tidy up the shelves.  I now store my linens here instead of in plastic bins.  The shelves are so much easier to access.

IMG_4767 IMG_4782 IMG_4765

This is my new shipping area.  With the re-opening of my Etsy shop, I realized I need a dedicated space for weighing, measuring and wrapping orders.

IMG_4768

Here is a little peek at my promotional goodies.  I include a purple pen with every order.  Gee, what do you think my favourite colour is?
  IMG_4769

These walls still need painting!  You can see my DIY lightbox on the old pupil’s desk at the foot of the massage table. Of course, my desk always looks like this. It’s not like I just tidy up for the sake of taking photos ;)

IMG_47804 IMG_4781 IMG_4778

This is my cupboard full of goodies.  This is the only spot I delegate to raw material (ingredients) storage. All supplies must fit in this cupboard or else I have to get rid of something; It’s the only way I can keep my supply habit under control.  I use to blend at my desk, but after spilling nearly 30mL of Peppermint EO on my chair, I realized that was a dangerous operation.  Now the top of the IKEA drawers has become the blending station.

IMG_4772 IMG_4773 IMG_4783

Of course, every office needs some colour and cuteness to keep boredom at bay.

This is how I make all my important decisions.  Life is a crap-shoot, after all.
