You won’t hear me complaining about the price of gas. High gas prices are here to stay, and no amount of grumbling will make them disappear. Instead I’ve been focusing my energy on ways to reduce my gas consumption. I am aiming to fill my tank no more than twice a month. I last filled my tank on May 9th, and I’m just now getting under 1/8 of a tank. That’s almost three weeks on one tank of gas, yay me!
My secret is only two little things:
1. Riding my bike to work whenever possible. If I need to drop my son off at my parents’ house (they baby-sit), I put my bike on the bike rack and leave the van at my parents’ house and bike from there. Every little bit counts!
2. Not using the car at all on my days off. We walk or take the bus wherever we need to go. We live downtown, so there are plenty of shops and things to do within walking distance. I also happen to be a city bus driver myself, so it’s free for me to ride!
Many of my co-workers tell me they would like to ride their bike, BUT …..”it’s too far away” ….. “I have no place to store a bike” ….. “it takes too long”….insert your excuse here! Hey, I know it’s not easy to get motivated. I still look for excuses to not ride some days. It’s always easy to not do something. You just have to get up off your butt and git ‘er done! Like I said, the high prices are here and they will only get higher. I would consider making long-term changes, such as:
- Consider moving closer to your job or school, or moving from the ‘burbs into the city. This will get you closer to public transportation, make it easier for you to bike, or at least reduce your car commute.
- Get a smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicle. Does a family of 3 people really need a Hummer? Actually, does ANYONE outside of the military really need a Hummer?
- Trade in your gas-powered lawn mower for an electric model, or better yet, a simple push mower. I would get goats myself if the city would allow it. lol
Besides the financial and environmental benefits of using less gas, I may actually start losing some of this baby weight. Hey, my son will only be TWO this summer, it’s about time!
